WSCC Club Sound Testing - Compass Inn
17th April 2003

With up to 8 track days planned for 2003 members asked how they could test their cars to check that they were below 100db before paying their money at the track only to be turned away for being too noisy.  Chris Varey came to the rescue and offered to bring his sound testing equipment to the next meeting and test everyone's car for free.  Chris has got the motor racing bug well and truly and owns an Ultima and a Westfield Seight that was featured on the front cover of Jan/Feb 2003 WW.  That was it then, the club meeting including the sound test was all set for 17th April.
The weather could not have been better for the event in the car park of the Compass Inn, a lovely mild evening following a warm sunny day.  The car park started to fill up with Westfields and a few other cars a total of 17 by the end of the evening.  Dave Bence brought his superbly built Quantum Xtreme which has been featured in Which Kit? and Richard Gould turned up in his Formula27.  The club banner got its first airing since being provided by the WSCC and we assembled with a pint for a group picture.

Chris Varey decided to bring his Ultima and we all drooled over it especially when he opened the bonnet to reveal a Chevy Brutus 6.5L 550BHP engine.

The sound test got underway where one by one all cars were driven into an open area to avoid reflected noise and tested for the magic figure of 100bd at 4500rpm half a metre from the exhaust pipe.

This test is pictured below with Chris Varey testing the Seight of Stan Thomas - a retired engineer and a fountain of knowledge with engines.

Those who were too loud and wanted to take to the track at Castle Combe then had just over a week to get their cars ready for the event.
