Welcome to

TIM’S LOCOST

I started on the project attracted by the less than £250 by line and the envy of brother and brother-in-law owning ragtops. The process was helped by conversations with Stephen Eaton over the back of a Shetland pony.

Access to a Gas welding set, a reasonable set of tools and the book set me going. I first made a model of the chassis, which was well worth while as it helped identify a few gaps in the book.

I picked up a 1300 Crossflow plus gearbox from Stephen along with Cortina uprights, as he had opted for an SSC Stylus and then found an axle and rack. Fortunately Steel in Newtown is relatively easy, not always the case if you read some Locosters experience. Endless cutting was followed by lots of Welding and finally a coat or three of Massey Ferguson red and staring to fit out. Specialist welding jobs like wishbones and propshaft have been offered by Mig owners Stephen and Hywel.

Being a sucker for punishment I have adapted the loom from a Mk I golf and at present have the instrument cluster as well but I may abandon that. I have also acquired a disfigured Westfield nose and practiced my fibreglassing skills, Thank you Hywel!

The state of play at the moment is Chassis ahead of rear Axle complete behind it is waiting for top seatbelt mounting and rear frame and panelling. Centre is floored and panelled, front awaits panelling and also Bonnet. Cockpit to be lined.

The powertrain is in place and has run briefly, it is now sitting on RS 4 spokes and GAZ shocks and waiting attention to the rear end. However the rub is that it is being built in a shed with 4 foot doors and it is about 4 foot 6 inches wide, which leads to much hilarity from my family. Time will tell on the launch process!

So far I have taken about three years, with weak excuses like gardening, house maintenance being fielded as required. The pictures below show the latest state of play. As you can see, running and the latest moves include a bonnet and matching colours for the plastic.
