DeHavilland Museum September04

Following on from my post in the “Which Event In History” thread on the board regarding the De Havilland Mosquito I vaguely remembered that the Mozzie museum was not too far away and I’d even though I’d always intended to visit I never had.

After the usual posts we decided to team up with Mal and some of the SG7 guys for a joint run out to the museum.

I met up with Dick, Liam, Neil, Andy and Colin at Tesco in Milton for a coffee and chat at Tesco before taking the scenic route to Stevenage via Royston, Walkren and met up with Mal and the SG7s at the Novotel.

Now, please forgive me but due to the late submission of this report I haven’t spoken to Mal and got the names of the SG7 chaps but there were two Robin Hoods, a very dandy Dax with lots of leather and Sat Nav and Two additional Westies.

The run from the Novotel to the Museum went without a hitch (apart from Liam taking a detour around the M25) and we parked up, paid our fee and wandered around for a couple of hours taking in the sights.

Now, the Museum is a little ramshackle, old, a bit run down and staffed entirely by volunteers but IMHO it adds to the place.
They have three Mossies in various stages of rebuild including the prototype W4050.
They have a very relaxed attitude to the visitors that allows you to get up close and personal with the aircraft and the staff will happily chat to you for hours showing you around the aircraft.
The Star attractions are of course the Mossies themselves which are just incredible to look round, touch and smell particularly if you like wood and the memorabilia in the same hanger as W4050 would take you a week to look at properly.
It’s a real pity that there are none of these magnificent aircraft flying today.

The staff let us park the cars in the grounds for a group shot where they attracted a lot of attention from the museums patrons and apparently we’ll get a mention in the museum’s monthly news letter that goes world wide.

We departed for the run home following Liam who was on a bit of a mission (to say the least) loosing most of the rest of the group by Letchworth, Andy caught up with me mid way back to Cambridge having a “moment” or two in Royston (less said about that the better in case Tanya reads WW)
